Chaplain Charlie and the Lorica

My brother is flying out to Kuwait for a 2 year stint as head chaplain for the Middle East.  He'll get to come back stateside twice.  He just called me and asked me to please pray St. Patrick's Lorica for him while he is flying.  I told him I would do so every day while he is gone.  I'd like for others to joine me.  If you skip to the bottom, you'll find several versions you can easily sing.  But first ....

First, St. Patrick is, indeed, a real person.  If you'd like a short, surprisingly accurate and highly entertaining telling of his life, Veggie Tales has you covered.  In short, and with the understanding that parts of this can be contested, he was born in the late 4th century in Wales, was stolen by the Irish and was a slave/pig shepherd for most of his young life, escaped and went to France where he became a Bishop, received a dream of the Irish calling him back to preach to them, came back and was largely responsible for Christianity coming to Ireland.

One story told of him is that, when he arrived in Ireland, he landed at Tara (the seat of the High King) and lit the Paschal (Easter) fire.  This fell at a holy time for the Irish during which no fire was meant to be lit until the sacred fire of the Druids was.  They saw the fire and one prophesied to the High King that, if the fire wasn't extinguished, it would engulf all of Ireland.  The kings men came for Patrick and his men.  Patrick prayed this prayer and they all turned into deer and escaped.

The song/prayer has many names.  In the 11th century Liber Hymnorum, a collection of Irish hymns that I just realized I don't possess and there is no excuse for that, it's called
Faeth Fiada.  Féth fíada is a mist or veil in Irish mythology, which members of the Tuatha Dé Danann use to enshroud themselves, rendering their presence invisible to human eyesight. Féth denotes this mist in particular, and fíada originally meant "knower", then came to mean "lord, master, possessor".

It's also called "The Deer's Cry" for obvious reasons.  But it's most commonly known as "The Lorica."  Lorica is Latin for "breastplate."  So the Irish name denotes hiding while the Latin name denotes protection.

Long before I ever looked at anything relating to Celtic Christianity or knew that St. Patrick wasn't just a name for an imaginary leprechaun, I had actually encountered the prayer in Madeline L'Engle's A Swiftly Tilting Planet:

     With St. Patrick, in this fateful hour
     I call on heaven with all heaven with its power,
     The sun with its brightness,
     The snow with its whiteness,
     The fire with all the strength it hath,
     The lightning with its rapid wrath,
     The winds with their swiftness along their path,
     The sea with its deepness,
     The rocks with its starkness,
     All these I place,
     By God's almighty help and grace,
    Between myself and the powers of darkness.

Around the time I read this, I was in college getting a degree in Criminal Justice.  One of the books I had to read was about how to identify Satanic crimes.  One of the ways was if there was stuff written in runes.  I fucking LOVED the runes as did my sister, Katie.  We both learned how to write in them.  And I would write the above form of the Lorica in runes over and over without knowing that it was based on a real hymn/prayer, much less one by St. Patrick.

Later, I found out about the real Patrick and the real prayer.  Ever since, I've been collecting versions of it.  When Josiah was young, he and I used to go hiking regularly and I taught it to him then.  I'd sing a line and have him sing it back to me.  Eventually, we had it down to where I would sing a line and he'd sing the next one in a kind of call-and-response.  We used to do it on the way to school every morning.

Anyway, if you want to join in praying for Lt. Colonel Fr. Josh White, or Chaplain Charlie as I have decided to start calling him, pick a version and join in!

VARIOUS VERSIONS OF ST. PATRICK'S LORICA:

This hymn was composed by St. Patrick in a time of great danger. It is called the "Deer's Cry" because, according to legend, Patrick and his companions turned into deer and escaped danger. It is also called the "Lorica" which is Latin for "Breastplate." Here are several translations of the hymn:

To the tune of Bunessan or Morning Has Broken:

Rising I thank You, mighty and strong One
King of Creation, giver of rest.
Firmly confessing threeness of Persons
Oneness of Godhead, Trinity blest.

This day God gives me strength of high heaven
Sun and moon shining, flame in my hearth
Flashing of lightning, wind in its swiftness
Deeps of the ocean, firmness of earth.

This day God sends me Strength as my guardian
Might to uphold me, Wisdome as guide.
Your eyes are watchful, Your ears are listening
Your lips are speaking, Friend at my side.

God's way is my way, God's shield is round me
God's host defends me, saving from ill.
Angels of heaven drive from me always
All that would harm me, stand at my side.

Christ be beside me, Christ be before me.
Christ be behind me King of my heart.
Christ be within me, Christ be below me.
Christ be above me Never to part.

Christ on my right hand, Christ on my left hand.
Christ all around me Shield in the strife.
Christ in my sleeping, Christ in my sitting.
Christ in my rising Light of my life.

Christ be in all hearts Thinking about me.
Christ be on all tongues Telling of me.
Christ be the vision In eyes that see me,
In ears that hear me Christ ever be.

Rising I thank You, mighty and strong One
King of Creation, giver of rest.
Firmly confessing threeness of Persons
Oneness of Godhead, Trinity blest.

The version found in most hymnals, can be sung to most office tunes such as Conditor Alme Siderum.  Or, for those who know CCM music better, it can be sung to In Christ Alone:

I bind unto myself today
the strong name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same,
the Three-in-One, and One-in-Three.

I bind this day to me forever,
by power of faith, Christ's Incarnation;
His baptism in the River Jordan;
His death on the Cross for my salvation;
His bursting from the spiced tomb;
His riding up the heavenly way;
His coming at the day of doom.

I bind unto myself the power
of the great love of the Cherubim;
The sweet "Well Done" in judgment hour:
The service of the Seraphim;
Confessor's faith, Apostles' word;
The Patriarchs' prayers, the Prophets' scrolls;
All good deeds done unto the Lord.

I bind unto myself today
the virtues of the starlit heaven;
The glorious suns' life-giving ray;
The whiteness of the moon at even;
The flashing of the lightning free;
The whirling wind's tempestuous shocks;
The stable earth; the deep salt sea.
Around the old, eternal rocks.

I bind unto myself today
the power of God to hold and lead;
His eye to watch, His might to stay;
The wisdom of my God to teach;
His hand to guide, His shield to ward;
The Word of God to give me speech;
His heavenly host to be my guard;

Against the demon snares of sin;
The vice that gives temptation force
The natural lusts that war within;
The hostile men that mar my course;
Few or many, far or nigh;
In every place and in all hours;
Against their fierce hostility.
I bind to me these holy powers

Against all Satan's spells and wiles;
Against false words of heresy;
Against the knowledge that defiles;
Against the heart's idolatry;
Against the wizard's evil craft;
Against the death-wound and the burning;
The choking wave and poisoned shaft;
Protect me, Christ, til thy returning.

Christ be with me, Christ within me;
Christ beside me, Christ before me;
Christ beside me, Christ to win me;
Christ to comfort and restore me;
Christ beneath me, Christ above me;
Christ in Quiet, Christ in danger;
Christ in hearts of all that love me;
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

I bind unto myself the Name
The strong name of the Trinity;
By invocation of the same,
the Three-in-One, and One-in-Three;
Of whom all nature hath creation;
Eternal Father, Word, and Spirit.
Praise to the Lord of my salvation.
Salvation is of Christ the Lord.

Two more verses not usually found with the original.  These would go after the line "Around the old, eternal rocks." :

I call upon the noble earth
To give me strength both day and night
Her granite and her gems of worth
Are tokens of her various might
And from her shores the endless sea
In calm and tempest girds the sphere
And like the earth, the waters free
Shall be my trust against all fear

Above the earth and waters wide
The air enfolds the globe's fair breast
In it good spirits do abide,
I count on them in strife and rest
And last of all, the golden fire
Shall be my great and strong ally
The goodly spirits that never tire
Are all my strength below, on high

Marty Haugen's rendering:

May the Spirit of Christ be our hope through the day
Be our guard through the night, our companion on the way.

Christ be ever before us,
Christ be ever behind us,
Christ be ever within.

Christ on our left hand watching,
At our right hand guiding,
Christ above, beneath us guarding,
Near to us abiding.

Christ be in each holy silence,
Christ be in our speaking,
Christ in ev'ry work we offer,
Ever in our seeking.

Let us be God's light in the darkness,
let us be God's kindness;
Let us be God's justice and mercy,
Hands and feet of Christ.

God Creator, bless and keep us,
Christ, be ever near us;
Spirit be the light before us,
Gentle be our pathway.

John Michael Talbot's version from the album "Hiding Place":

Christ, as a light illumine and guide me.
Christ, as a shield overshadow me.
Christ under me; Christ over me;
Christ beside me on my left and my right.

This day be within and without me,
lowly and meek, yet all-powerful.
Be in the heart of each to whom I speak;
in the mouth of each who speaks unto me.
This day be within and without me,
lowly and meek, yet all-powerful.

Christ as a light; Christ as a shield;
Christ beside me on my left and my right.

Note: The text in the image at the very top is, "Fretus divino numine nivem tenebras a mago per territorium obductas, quas nec ipsemet magus tunc poterat dissoluere, subito abigit." In English, that's,  "Relying on divine power, he suddenly drove away the darkness that the magician had cast over the territory, which even the magician himself could not dispel."

The Ballad of Murdoch

I had to euthanize my cat, Murdoch, on January 9th.  There's really only one other person (my wife) who gets how amazing he was.  But trying to explain it would be frustrating to me (because I would fail) and oppressive to others (because it would be the equivalent of subjecting them to a slideshow of a vacation with the added bonus of feeling compelled to listen because it's about a dead cat).  So, imma write about it here and then if you want to read it ... well ... that's on you.  I won't know either way.   Context first.  I moved to NY in 2021 to help my sister open a vet clinic.  I cashed out my entire life in NC and came up alone, the first time I'd been truly alone in probably three decades.  My sister lived down the road, but ... still.  It's hard to convey exactly how much of an uprooting it was for me at almost 50 years old.  We opened the clinic in early 2022.  Up until this point, while I'd always liked cats, I defi...

Brian Thompson and Syndrome

The Titanic submarine sank killing all passengers in mid-June.  I was surprised at the glee some, even some people I knew to be very caring, had at their demise.  When I asked one person, they replied that all those rich bastards likely deserved it.  When I mentioned there were younger people on board, they said, "Well, they'd probably just grow up like their dads."  Kill Hitler as a baby, I guess?  I didn't quite get the vitriol JUST because they were rich.  And, I guess, reckless and stupid.   But the murder of Brian Thompson, the late United Healthcare CEO ... that one I get.  It's not just because he's rich.  It's because his wealth was founded on the deaths of so many people that he and his company wrongly denied healthcare coverage.  I don't think I need to go into the specifics of the murder.  It's covered a LOT in the media right now.  As is the reaction.  People are, again, gleeful.  But it's more than j...

Flag Turned Upside Down

I've heard the recent hullabaloo about Justice Alito flying an upside down United States flag and the Appeal to Heaven flag at his house.  Both flags have apparently been co-opted by proponents of the "stolen election" conspiracy theory.  Alito, being the good Catholic that he is, pulled an Adam and blamed his wife.  As it turns out, she is actually the vexillologist of the family and has even designed an anti-Pride flag (using the Italian word for shame).   But what got me was that the upside down flag and the Appeal to Heaven flag were so thoroughly associated with MAGAts.  I mean ... sure, if I see an upside down flag flown from a house these days, I assume they're a certain type of extreme right-winger and that is usually confirmed by other displays around the house.  But the Appeal to Heaven flag?  I don't ever remember seeing that flown on January 6th.  I mean, sure, the Gadsden Flag , which I used to like, has become associated with ...
