Fall down seven times, get up eight ...

The Japanese saying 七転八起 (Shichiten Hakki) literally means: Fall down seven times; get up eight. In a flood of troubles, bear up and continue.

A certain brother asked Abba Sisoes: “Counsel me, Father, for I have fallen to sin. What am I to do?”

The Elder said to him: “When you fall, get up again.”

With bitterness the sinning brother continued: “Ah! Father, I got up, yet I fell to the same sin again.”

The Elder, so as not to discourage the brother, answered: “Then get up again and again.”

The young man asked with a certain despondency: “How long can I do that, Father?”

The Elder, giving him courage, said to the brother: “Until the end of your life, whether you be found in the commendable attempt at lifting yourself up from sin or falling again to it. For wherever it is that a man is found at the last moment of his life on earth, whether it be in things good or evil, there he will be judged, going forth either to punishment or to reward.”

Brian Thompson and Syndrome

The Titanic submarine sank killing all passengers in mid-June.  I was surprised at the glee some, even some people I knew to be very caring, had at their demise.  When I asked one person, they replied that all those rich bastards likely deserved it.  When I mentioned there were younger people on board, they said, "Well, they'd probably just grow up like their dads."  Kill Hitler as a baby, I guess?  I didn't quite get the vitriol JUST because they were rich.  And, I guess, reckless and stupid.   But the murder of Brian Thompson, the late United Healthcare CEO ... that one I get.  It's not just because he's rich.  It's because his wealth was founded on the deaths of so many people that he and his company wrongly denied healthcare coverage.  I don't think I need to go into the specifics of the murder.  It's covered a LOT in the media right now.  As is the reaction.  People are, again, gleeful.  But it's more than j...

Flag Turned Upside Down

I've heard the recent hullabaloo about Justice Alito flying an upside down United States flag and the Appeal to Heaven flag at his house.  Both flags have apparently been co-opted by proponents of the "stolen election" conspiracy theory.  Alito, being the good Catholic that he is, pulled an Adam and blamed his wife.  As it turns out, she is actually the vexillologist of the family and has even designed an anti-Pride flag (using the Italian word for shame).   But what got me was that the upside down flag and the Appeal to Heaven flag were so thoroughly associated with MAGAts.  I mean ... sure, if I see an upside down flag flown from a house these days, I assume they're a certain type of extreme right-winger and that is usually confirmed by other displays around the house.  But the Appeal to Heaven flag?  I don't ever remember seeing that flown on January 6th.  I mean, sure, the Gadsden Flag , which I used to like, has become associated with ...
