Epic of Cijay

Composed upon the passing of C.J. around the year of our Lord 2010:

Dad-Koresh, a king.
Dad-Koresh, a king!
He who saw the deep places below Khampound
2/3 Presbyterian and 1/3 Baptist
He tormented his children
He made them angry
They cried out to the gods,
"Send us a companion for our king!
Save us from his purityrannity!"

Aroo-roo heard their cries.
Enki-dog, a wild mutt with reindeer antlers
2/3 dog and 1/3 ottoman
Entered Khankhord
Entered Khampound
He hid upstairs
He hid in the dining room
Dad-Koresh found Enki-dog
They became great friends

The new friends went to Khan-apolis together
Where the great Pam-Bubba watched shows by the hundreds
Enki-dog stood and wagged his tail
Dad-Koresh shined his bluetooth
Pam-Bubba was asleep, so they took a rain check

But Enki-dog fell to the ground,
struck down by the gods.
Dad-Khoresh wept bitter tears saying,
"He who was my companion through naptime and dinner
is gone forever."

Explanation: This is based on the version of the Epic of Gilgamesh as told to Dathan by Captain Jean Luc Picard in the TNG episode "Darmok."  Daddy had forbidden Katie from bringing other pets home.  She found C.J. (Cracker Jack) and brought him home anyway.  C.J. somehow knew the score and, if he walked into a room where Daddy was, would slowly back out and hide.

Eventually, when Daddy and Mommy left the Compound, C.J. went with them and he and Daddy became best buds.

The Ballad of Murdoch

I had to euthanize my cat, Murdoch, on January 9th.  There's really only one other person (my wife) who gets how amazing he was.  But trying to explain it would be frustrating to me (because I would fail) and oppressive to others (because it would be the equivalent of subjecting them to a slideshow of a vacation with the added bonus of feeling compelled to listen because it's about a dead cat).  So, imma write about it here and then if you want to read it ... well ... that's on you.  I won't know either way.   Context first.  I moved to NY in 2021 to help my sister open a vet clinic.  I cashed out my entire life in NC and came up alone, the first time I'd been truly alone in probably three decades.  My sister lived down the road, but ... still.  It's hard to convey exactly how much of an uprooting it was for me at almost 50 years old.  We opened the clinic in early 2022.  Up until this point, while I'd always liked cats, I defi...

Brian Thompson and Syndrome

The Titanic submarine sank killing all passengers in mid-June.  I was surprised at the glee some, even some people I knew to be very caring, had at their demise.  When I asked one person, they replied that all those rich bastards likely deserved it.  When I mentioned there were younger people on board, they said, "Well, they'd probably just grow up like their dads."  Kill Hitler as a baby, I guess?  I didn't quite get the vitriol JUST because they were rich.  And, I guess, reckless and stupid.   But the murder of Brian Thompson, the late United Healthcare CEO ... that one I get.  It's not just because he's rich.  It's because his wealth was founded on the deaths of so many people that he and his company wrongly denied healthcare coverage.  I don't think I need to go into the specifics of the murder.  It's covered a LOT in the media right now.  As is the reaction.  People are, again, gleeful.  But it's more than j...

Flag Turned Upside Down

I've heard the recent hullabaloo about Justice Alito flying an upside down United States flag and the Appeal to Heaven flag at his house.  Both flags have apparently been co-opted by proponents of the "stolen election" conspiracy theory.  Alito, being the good Catholic that he is, pulled an Adam and blamed his wife.  As it turns out, she is actually the vexillologist of the family and has even designed an anti-Pride flag (using the Italian word for shame).   But what got me was that the upside down flag and the Appeal to Heaven flag were so thoroughly associated with MAGAts.  I mean ... sure, if I see an upside down flag flown from a house these days, I assume they're a certain type of extreme right-winger and that is usually confirmed by other displays around the house.  But the Appeal to Heaven flag?  I don't ever remember seeing that flown on January 6th.  I mean, sure, the Gadsden Flag , which I used to like, has become associated with ...
